Some of the Determinants of Health that affect a person living with Ulcerative Colitis include:

1) Physical Environment - There are several environmental factors, such as infections, that may trigger Ulcerative Colitis in those who are considered to have a genetic susceptibility.

2) Genetics - Ulcerative Colitis tends to run in families and this suggests that genetics play a role in the disease. Approximately 10-25% have a first-degree relative (either a sibling or parent) with inflammatory bowel disease (either Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's disease). It equally affects both men and women.

3) Employment and working conditions - maintaining a job could be stressful for someone with this disease. Depending on the nature of their position they may need to leave their employment or talk with their employer to educate them on the disease.

4) Education and Literacy - someone with Ulcerative Colitis may have not been able to further their education due to their health. Those with lower education are more likely to be unemployed and also more likely to suffer from poor health.

5) Social Environments – those who suffer with Ulcerative colitis may not attend many social events as they have to always be aware as to the location of a restroom. Attending busy events would rarely happen due to the fact that there would be long lineups for the restroom. Social relationships have a big impact on one’s health and those with Ulcerative colitis may tend to keep to themselves until they feel that they have their disease under control.

6) Social Support Networks – Although there are social support options available to those with Ulcerative Colitis some may be to embarrassed to ulitize these networks. Some of these include Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, family, friends, etc.

7) Personal Health Practises and coping skills – talking to a doctor about health and exercise options and a meeting with a Dietician would be very beneficial to one’s health. This would help in the management of Ulcerative Colitis.
