Nurse -takes your temperature, blood pressure, etc. The nurse may also discuss with you colitis symptoms you are experiencing and their level of severity. A nurse will discuss your diet and provide you with information regarding your disease.
To become a Registered Nurse you have to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing(BN or BScN). It will require four years of post-secondary education to complete your study/training. It is also required that you pass the Canadian Nursing Examination. This is a really good time to enter the nursing profession because a growing shortage of nurses exsists today. The aging population is steadily growing so there will be no shortage of jobs for nurses. This need for nurses will contine well into the future.
Family Physician- your doctor will take many steps to accurately diagnose UC. These steps that are taken will help rule out other possible causes of the symptoms that you are having. Other possible causes of your symptoms may include bacterial or viral infection, irritable bowel syndrome, or Crohn's disease. Your doctor will examine your medical history, perform a through physical exam, and perform many other tests. Stool examination, Blood tests, Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, Barium enema x-ray.
To become a doctor you must first complete a Bachelor's Degree and Doctor of Medicine certificate..this is followed by 2-3 years of residency. The length of study/training is 8-12 years post-secondary.
Gastroenterologist-endoscopy procedures are usually performed by gastroenterology specialists. Gastroenterologists have specific training in all endoscopic procedures and perform colonoscopies routinely. They focus on preventing, treating, and mainting conditions that affect the digestive system.
*Gastroenterologists are to complete an undergraduate education, medical school, and complete residency training in internal medicine. Most complete a bachelors degree in a science field and then go on to medical school to complete their doctorate of medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. In order to practise, Gastroenterologists must become licensed.
Xray Technician - your physician may require you to have an xray to determine if there are any blockages in the intestines. X-rays with contrast - barium, a chalky liquid, is inserted or ingested into the colon to determine the parts of the colon that may be affected. It is important to drink lots of water after this procedure as it will flush out the barium from the colon.
Dietician - your physician may refer you to see a Dietician to discuss what foods to avoid and as well set up a healthy eating plan.
Eduaction and Training Required:**
