    Ulcerative colitis is a disease which causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers. These ulcers are found in the lining of the rectum and colon. Inflammation kills the cells that usually line the colon and this is where the ulcers form. This then causes bleeding and will produce pus. When there is Inflammation in the colon it may cause the colon to empty frequently and this causes diarrhea.
    It usually affects people between the ages of 15 and 30 but it can occur in people of any age. It equally affects both men and women.

    Ulcerative proctitis - this is when it is limited to the rectum. Symptoms include diarrhea, pain in the rectal area, bloody stool, sense of urgency to empty bowel.
    Proctosigmoiditis - this is when the rectum and sigmoid colon are affected. Symptoms include diarrhea, the rectal area experiencing cramps and pain, bloody stool, and experiencing pain that if of a moderate level of severity on the left side of the abdomen.

    Pancolitis - the entire colon is affected. This must be treated with oral medications in order for the active ingredients to reach all the portions of the colon that are affected.

    1) Physical Environment - There are several environmental factors, such as infections, that may trigger Ulcerative Colitis in those who are considered to have a genetic susceptibility.

    2) Genetics - Ulcerative Colitis tends to run in families and this suggests that genetics play a role in the disease. Approximately 10-25% have a first-degree relative (either a sibling or parent) with inflammatory bowel disease (either Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's disease). It equally affects both men and women.
    3) Employment and working conditions - maintaining a job could be stressful for someone with this disease. Depending on the nature of their position they may need to leave their employment or talk with their employer to educate them on the disease.

    To become a Registered Nurse you have to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing(BN or BScN). It will require four years of post-secondary education to complete your study/training. It is also required that you pass the Canadian Nursing Examination. This is a really good time to enter the nursing profession because a growing shortage of nurses exsists today. The aging population is steadily growing so there will be no shortage of jobs for nurses. This need for nurses will contine well into the future.
    Family Physician - your doctor will take many steps to accurately diagnose UC. These steps that are taken will help rule out other possible causes of the symptoms that you are having. Other possible causes of your symptoms may include bacterial or viral infection, irritable bowel syndrome, or Crohn's disease. Your doctor will examine your medical history, perform a through physical exam, and perform many other tests.

    Xray Technician - your physician may require you to have an xray to determine if there are any blockages in the intestines. X-rays with contrast - barium, a chalky liquid, is inserted or ingested into the colon to determine the parts of the colon that may be affected. It is important to drink lots of water after this procedure as it will flush out the barium from the colon.
    Dietician - your physician may refer you to see a Dietician to discuss what foods to avoid and as well set up a healthy eating plan.

    -The Education and Training required to become a Dietician is to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or a closely related field.
